Why MMC is using AI and how we are doing it responsibly

Artificial Intelligence is now part of everyday business. Most organisations are already using it in some form, often behind the scenes. At MMC, this is no different. But from the beginning, we made a conscious decision that how we use AI matters just as much as whether we use it.

That is why Lucy, one of our team, has taken on the role of MMC’s AI champion. Her focus is not just exploring new tools, but helping us understand where AI genuinely adds value, where it does not, and how we can use it in a thoughtful, ethical and efficient way. This includes sharing best practice across the business, encouraging responsible use and keeping sustainability front of mind.

Alongside the growth of AI, we also recognise that there is anxiety.
Is this another wave of technological change that society will adapt to over time, or are there genuine risks that deserve more attention?

At MMC, we believe the right answer sits somewhere in the middle. It is important to look at AI honestly. That means recognising both the opportunities and the challenges, and being transparent about how we use it.

The environmental concern

One of the biggest concerns today is the environmental impact of AI. It is a valid anxiety that should not be ignored. AI relies on large data centres, and those data centres require energy to run.

The reality is a lot more complex than the headlines. AI sits within a much wider digital ecosystem.

That does not mean the conversation should stop. Energy demand is increasing, and the technology sector must continue to improve efficiency and transition towards cleaner sources. Many major providers are already investing heavily in renewable energy, advanced cooling and more efficient infrastructure.

The concept of “green AI” is becoming central to how the industry develops.

Technology is not inherently the problem

It is easy to focus on new technologies when discussing sustainability. However, the bigger issue is how energy and resources are used across society.

Inefficient systems, outdated hardware, always-on infrastructure and manual processes all contribute to unnecessary consumption. These challenges existed long before AI.

This is why we see AI as also part of the solution.

AI is already being used to:
-Improve renewable energy forecasting
-Optimise supply chains and reduce fuel use
-Identify waste in complex systems
-Support smarter infrastructure and logistics
-Reduce duplication and manual workflows

When used with intention and care, AI has the potential to support efficiency and sustainability rather than undermine it.

How MMC is using AI

Our approach is as practical and measured as possible. We are not using AI to replace people or use for unnecessary tasks. A LinkedIn caption, image generation is not always the best way forward as value is lost. But behind the scenes, we plan to AI with intention, sustainability and our client and the forefront of our minds.

We see AI as an assistant, not a substitute.

Addressing uncertainty

It is natural to feel cautious about any new technology it is a natural moral panic that occurs as new technologies are introduced. The internet, cloud computing and digital transformation all triggered similar debates in the past. Remember Alexa? Face ID etc

Technology itself is neutral. It is the person behind it that shape outcomes.

Organisations that understand emerging tools are better placed to use them responsibly. Those that ignore them risk falling behind.

For us, the answer is not fear. It is education, transparency and thoughtful adoption.

A balanced way forward

AI is not going away. The question is not whether it will be used, but how.

The future will be shaped by organisations that combine technology with human judgement, clear purpose and responsible practice.

At MMC, that means using AI to support better decision making for clients, while constantly remaining mindful of its environmental and ethical impact.

It isn’t necessarily good or bad it is a tool for humans. We are in control of it AI is not in control of us.  People who understand AI will have an advantage over those who ignore it.
